Claire Anscomb is a Lecturer Fine Art at De Montfort University in Leicester. She is a practicing artist and philosopher. Through the construction of meticulous drawings, she explores themes surrounding visibility from the representation of women in public sculpture and “invisible” illnesses, to the use of algorithms in apps designed to beautify individuals. Her work has been exhibited in venues including the Jerwood Space, London, and Palazzo Strozzi, Florence. She has been the recipient of awards for her work including the Royal Miniature Society Young Artist Award (2021, 2019), the Contemporary Art Trust Award (2015), and the Signature Art Prize, Drawing and Printmaking (2014).
She has published philosophical work on topics including AI art, photographic phenomenology, and creativity in artistic and scientific practices. For the latter work, she was awarded the 2021 John Fisher Memorial Prize and a 2022 Irene H. Chayes New Voices Award by the American Society of Aesthetics. She is also co-editor of the journal Debates in Aesthetics, published by the British Society of Aesthetics.
